The Basics of Marriage Rummy

Marriage is a three-pack Rummy game that is highly recognized in Nepal, most especially in the Kathmandu region. Is also a well-known game in Bhutan. It is widely played during the two main Hindu festivals and by Rummy enthusiasts throughout the year.

Players and Cards

Two to five people are allowed to participate in a game of Marriage. Three standard 50-card packs are used, which leave all jokers behind. Additionally, each deal sports a number of wild cards and these are sometimes collectively known as jokers.

Both deal and play observe a clockwise direction.

Combinations

In any Rummy game, the primary goal is to collect sets of equal cards and runs of consecutive cards in suit. In Marriage, all of these combinations may consist of three cards only.

The tiplu is a card selected at random during each game. All cards of the same rank as the tiplu and those that are above and below it in the same suit are wild. The card immediately above the tiplu is known as the poplu while the card below the tiplu is the jhiplu. For this purpose, the ace is observed to be next above the king, and the two above the ace. The tiplu, poplu, and jhiplu are collectively known as mal, and cards of the same rank as the tiplu in the other suits are identified as ordinary jokers.

There are different types of three-card combinations that can be collected, including:

  • Tunnela – A composition of three identical cards.
  • Pure Sequence – A composition of three consecutive cards of the same suit.
  • Dirty Sequence – Composed of two cards of the same suit and a joker that represents the third card of that suit from a consecutive sequence.
  • Triplet – A three-card combination consisting of cards of the same rank, but all of different suits.
  • Dirty Triplet – Composed of two cards of the same rank and different suits on top of a joker.

Considerations:

  • In a sequence an ace can only be placed at the end, but not in the middle.
  • Two identical cards and a joker is not a valid combination.
  • A pure sequence of three jokers is called a marriage and is one of the highest-ranking combinations in the game.

Deal

Any player may begin to deal. After the play is finished and the hand scored, the turn to deal passes to the left of the initial dealer.

The dealer gives 21 cards to each player, and turns the next card face-up to initiate the discard pile, and places the remaining cards face-down in a stack.

Any player who is dealt a tunnela can show the cards immediately, and they may then be added to a player’s final points at the end of the game. Players who opt to keep their tunnela’s hidden at the start have no point value.

Play

Each player, in turn, may take the top card of the stack or the face-up card discarded by the previous player. The player must then sacrifice one card to the discard pile. Players are only allowed to pick up the latest discard despite the cards all scattered for a clearer view. A player who takes the face-up card from the discard pile is not allowed to discard the same card. Joker

The ultimate objective is to gather three tunnelas or pure sequences. Any combination of these is suitable. The first person who collects this lays the tree combinations face-up on the table,then grabs a card from the middle of the face-down stack without showing it to the other participants and replaces it face-down under the stack. This card is the tiplu and it determines all the jokers for the current hand.

Dublees

Rather than collect three-card combinations, players have the option to collect dublees. Eight dublees are needed to win the game, and players who have seven dublees are given the opportunity to look at the tiplu. Take note that jokers cannot be used as wild cards when constructing dublees: all parts must comprise of two identical cards.

After looking at the tiplu, a dublee player is not allowed to take a card from the discard pile with the exception if it completes the players’ eighth dublee.

Ending the Play

The first option to win the game is if a player who has laid down three combinations that are tunnelas or pure sequences is able after drawing a card from four more valid three-card combinations. The player shows these combinations, lays them down, ad discards the remaining card.

The second option is possible after a player who has eight dublees draws a card. The player lays them down and the play ends. Eight dublees are composed of 16 cards, so the player will have five unused cards remaining alongside a discard.

Scoring

When the play ends, players tally their points. Points are scored for any tiplu, poplu, or jhiplu in the player’s final hand and for any tunnelas laid down after the deal. Extra points for a marriage score extra points.
